A website. With stuff on it.

To blog or not to blog. That is the question.

Hello! Today I am struggling with the nature of blogging… now that I’ve resurrected it, what should I actually say on my personal website blog thingy? It’s a tough decision. Ideally, I think I need three or four personal websites with no discernible links or affiliations!

Ok, now you’re probably wondering why I need multiple websites, what the hell I’m talking about, and why it’s a tough decision on what to say here. (Either that or you could not care less and have already moved on to read something that DOES make sense…)

Still here? Then I’ll try and explain!

It seems to me that most people that maintain a regular blog basically spew every little thought that enters their pretty little heads onto them and let the reader pick out what is or isn’t worth reading. Well, that’s ok up to a point, but if the noise to content ratio is high the likely outcome is losing the reader, and, let’s face it, if you’re publishing your innermost to the web then you’re expecting – or at least hoping – that someone takes the time to read it!

Well, you can rest assured that I’m not likely to do that anyway. You won’t see mundane hourly reports on what I’m doing right now. That’s not my style and I’m a more private person than that.

So here’s the thing: I’m pretty opinionated on a range of subjects, and I used to make them pretty clear when I blogged here before. Indeed, what with not being the type of blogger who wants to publish a daily diary of my mundane life, it was pretty much the focus of the thing (and believe it or not, I had quite a readership!)

But then I also used to use – and intend to use again – the site to showcase my artwork, photos, articles etc, and it was handy to be able to point a prospective client, customer, employer or colleague to them at times. Especially times like now, when I’m unemployed and looking for either a permanent job, or web and graphic design work to tide me over financially.

But then there’s those opinions of mine that they’re also likely to read if they dig around for more than a minute or two… and I know that some of them will be put off.

Now before you go thinking I’m some jackbooted neo nazi or something, I don’t think that my opinions are, like, way out there or anything. I am guilty of using some colorful language at times, that’s for sure, and I’m not afraid to say things aimed at particular people or entities. In short, I like a good rant every now and then.

So what to do? Do I just leave out anything remotely controversial or that expresses an opinion, completely steer clear of politics and current events and say nothing much about anything? Well, that would make for a pretty boring and sanitized blog, now wouldn’t it?

Or do I be as fearless and frank as I’d really like to be at the risk of discouraging potential clients or employers?

Or do I run or make use of multiple websites? Only showcase art on a site like Renderosity or DeviantArt, put photos on Flickr, blog on WordPress? And presumably not link any of them together, of course!

Well, I think that kind of defeats the point of having a personal website that collects ‘me’ in one location.

Maybe I just shouldn’t blog at all. That might be the easiest solution. Although then I’m not really going to have any content here, am I?!

Hmm. Tough decision, like I said.
